Carolyn Dekker teaches English at Finlandia University in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This essay is part of a larger nonfiction project, a pedagogical almanac that blends a seasonal memoir of life in the Keweenaw with meditations on teaching. She has recent essays in Identity Theory and Up North Literary Journal, as well as scholarship on Leslie Marmon Silko, Jean Toomer, and peace activism in American literature.
